Dr. Joseph A. Puma is the founder and president of Sorin Medical. With over 30 years of clinical experience, Dr. Puma has dedicated his career to the treatment, diagnosis, and prevention of cardiovascular disease, providing personalized care to patients from around the world. He is board certified in Interventional Cardiology, Cardiovascular Disease, and Internal Medicine. Throughout his career, Dr. Puma has been at the forefront of interventional cardiology and made significant contributions to the development of this field by embracing healthcare innovation and the continuous improvement of patient care in underserved communities.
Dr. Puma graduated from the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine with a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship at Long Island Medical Hospital.
In 1991, he joined the Faculty of Duke University Medical Center and achieved the rank of Associate Consulting Professor of Medicine in Cardiology. During his tenure, he was the principal investigator in over 20 groundbreaking clinical trials at The Duke Clinical Research Institute, all of which have helped to define contemporary cardiovascular care. Dr. Puma has also published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters.
Dr. Puma’s career has been one of continuous growth and leadership in Clinical Care, Research, and Education. He has served as the Chief of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at New York Methodist Hospital Cornell Heart Center, followed by Associate Director of Research and the Associate Director of the Interventional Cardiology Training Program at Lenox Hill Hospital. He most recently served as the Chief of Clinical Cardiology and Vice President of Strategy at Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital. Dr. Puma is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine Cardiology at the College of Physicians & Surgeons at Columbia University Medical Center.
Dr. Puma has always been driven to deliver a new standard of community-based medicine in New York. Deeply inspired by the words of University of Notre Dame founder Father Edward Sorin – “be a force for good in this world” – Dr. Puma founded Sorin Medical in 2013, the city’s largest private interventional cardiology practice.
