(Siemens) A New Flagship for Sorin Medical: Superior Care for Stronger Hearts

(Siemens) A New Flagship for Sorin Medical: Superior Care for Stronger Hearts

In the United States, we are currently witnessing a paradigm shift in heart and vascular care with Sorin Medical (Sorin) at the forefront as they’ve aimed to combine the most advanced technology with an individualized care approach. Sorin has 14 locations, two satellite locations, and recently opened their flagship Center in the heart of Manhattan, NY at 120 Wall Street, in September 2022 where they plan to focus on redefining cardiology.

The sleek and progressive medical space – a joint project between Sorin Medical, Siemens Healthineers , Siemens Healthineers Design & Construction, and Siemens Financial Services (SFS) – combines an innovative design with a patient-centric focus.

“There are a significant number of changes occurring within the Healthcare space right now, especially following the Covid-19 pandemic,” commented Dr. Joseph Puma, founder and CEO of Sorin Medical. “But what hasn’t changed is what patients want and what patients need. People in our field tend to forget a very crucial fact that drives our team in how we approach our work, and why I sought to bring this center to life. And that’s ultimately that our patients are here for us, we here for our patients.”

At Sorin, patients have access to the most advanced cardiovascular technology allowing early detection of coronary artery disease prevention of heart attacks and the relief of symptoms such as chest pain and shortness of breath.

“Dr. Puma and his staff’s commitment to their patients is irrefutable” spoke Richard Jewett, Account Executive for Siemens Healthineers. “In the United States, heart disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women with one person dying every 34 seconds from cardiovascular disease, according to the CDC. With trailblazing centers such as Sorin’s flagship, access to early detection and treatments will ultimately help save countless lives.”

Their innovative space is also the first in New York to house the state-of-the-art, dual source CT Heart scan dedicated to cardiovascular disease – the Sorin Heart Scan™. This system provides their team the ability to diagnose complex heart and vascular conditions with just a single, simple test. In addition, to this technology, Sorin’s team of top-notch physicians have pioneered approaches for minimally invasive treatments for heart and vascular conditions, while ensuring that the highest levels of safety and efficacy are maintained.

“One of our main priorities at Sorin is to have a process driven approach in order to make the diagnostic experience as comfortable and patient-centric as possible” explained Dr. Puma. “Not only does this create an efficient methodology for providing state-of-the-art cardiovascular care, but our patients will receive a proper diagnosis while spending less time at the facility – a much quicker experience than traditional hospitals.”

The integration of the Siemens Dual Source CT in the clinical workflow of patients with chest pain, shortness of breath, or at high-risk for heart disease has had an immediate beneficial clinical impact such as significantly reduced time to diagnosis, reduced testing time, less office visits and quicker time to treatment or reassurance.

Dr. Puma went on to highlight how the ‘One Siemens’ approach was crucial in bringing the new center to completion from early draft plans to a state-of-the-art facility located just steps from Pier 11 in the NY Financial District.

“It is always a challenge to get what you’ve imagined in your head, onto paper – especially when it’s an idea as ambitious and innovative as this center. Institutional knowledge plays a key role in executing an effective rollout on a large-scale project, especially when considering that this facility was designed and constructed during the height of a global pandemic. Every segment of Siemens expressed an intimate knowledge of our verticals, as well as a desire to learn more about what we were trying to achieve, how we were looking to effectively redefine our processes, and how to fully service each of our needs.”

Dr. Puma then added how financing was another key component supporting the success of this project.

“Working with SFS, a business that intuitively understood the medical and business sides of our operation made life so much easier for our team. Collaborating with a finance team that not only had a comprehensive understanding of our budget, the overall healthcare market, the specifics of our disease specialty, truly made the difference.”

As with many construction budgets, the original budgeted amount for Sorin Medical’s flagship ended up being just 50% of the final cost. With SFS involved from the earliest stages of the planning process, a customized and flexible financing solution was established to help meet Center’s targeted grand opening date.

The opening of this flagship Center also reinforces that collaboration between SFS, Siemens Healthineers, and customers like Sorin Medical can help redefine patient care and help save lives.

“Medicine by 2030 is trending towards ambulatory, where hospitals will mostly be comprised of ICU’s and high complexity patients and procedures” SFS Regional Healthcare Finance Manager Dick Crean went on to explain. “It’s important that we at SFS are at the forefront in supporting leading technology and innovation in the healthcare space. It’s clear the market is already responding towards these innovations, as Sorin Medical has already seen their center reach 50% patient capacity in just a few months.”
